Cerrajero cambiando un bombín de una puerta

A lock cylinder is a security element for the door that is inserted into the lock and where the key is inserted. Knowing how to choose the ideal lock cylinder for your lock and knowing how to install it is important to make your door a superior protection element. We are going to see step by step how we should remove the old lock cylinder and then fit the new one.

First a quick video to see how this can be done:

Let's break down the steps:

Step 1. Unscrew the lock cylinder

The first thing you need to know is that a lock cylinder is screwed to the door with a screw that runs from the door frame to the lock. Therefore, in order to perform this operation, you must open the door and, with a screwdriver, remove the screw that is located in the middle of the lock plate at the height of the cylinder.

Step 2. Remove the cylinder

Once unscrewed, insert a key into the cylinder and turn it slightly, ensuring that the cam is aligned with the cylinder, thus applying pressure to extract the lock cylinder from the door. In the natural position of the key, the cam will always be slightly tilted for safety reasons, preventing the cylinder from being removed.

Step 3. Take measurements of your bowler hat

How to take measurements of a door lock cylinder

Once you have the cylinder out of the lock, you can distinguish two things: the size of the cylinder and the size of the cam. First, use a measuring tape to measure the distance from one side to the start of the cam and from the other side to the start of the cam. Then, measure the distance of the cam to find out if it is short or long. The long cam measures 15mm and the short one 13.25mm.

Step 4. Choose a lock cylinder

Once you know both the measurement and the size of the cam, you can start looking for a security lock that meets these requirements. It is always good to look at the security of the lock as it is its main purpose: to protect your home.

Step 5. Insert the cylinder into the lock

Again, turn the key of the new cylinder slightly, insert it into the lock and screw it in from the edge of the door using the screw included in the package. Once installed, check that it works correctly.

We always recommend installing a cylinder with a security shield. This will provide essential extra protection to the cylinder to make it difficult to access the lock from the outside. Our duty is to recommend maximum security so that you can live safer and more peacefully. Now, take a look at our collection of door locks and decide to renew the security of your doors.
