Learn how to install a door handle on your doors
Below we will see step by step how to install a unified door handle on standard passage doors . This is the most commonly installed door handle today and you will need to know how to place it on your doors and some advice on how to adjust it . If you do not know how to choose the door handle you need, we recommend that you first consult the following article: " What door handle do your doors need? ".
Step #1. Check the door opening direction
The door can open to the right or to the left. The side that opens must always have the flat part of the latch (blue line) and the side that closes must have the inclined part (green line).
The way to change the orientation of the latch is either by turning the latch around or by inserting a screwdriver from the back to slightly remove the latch and turn it manually. Remember that the hole for the handle should always be at the top and the smaller hole for the thumbturn at the bottom .
Here is a photo of the back of the door handle so you can see where to insert the screwdriver.
Step #2. Insert the door handle into the door recess
Once you have determined the opening and closing position of the door and the orientation of the latch, insert the latch into the door recess . It is understood that when choosing the latch you have seen one that fits the hole you have in the door.
Step #3. Screw the handle to the door
Once the latch is inserted , screw it up and down along the edge of the door. Make sure that the axis of the handle's square is visible and centred in the hole in the door. If the door does not have a hole, make a hole with a drill that will allow at least the 8mm square to be inserted. We recommend that the hole be approximately 20mm.
This is how the profile door handle would look once installed . This installation guide is for a door handle for a passage door . If it were for a bathroom door and needed a lock with a deadbolt or a crutch, another hole would have to be made in the door at the distance where the second axis is: either 47 or 70mm . This hole would have to be around 10mm.
Step #4. Place the strike plate on the frame
Finally, you must install the latch on the door frame . This is what will catch the latch, prevent the door from opening without operating the handle and make it easier for the door to close . Simply screw it up and down and you will have the latch ready to work. However, you will need the handle to be able to use the latch .
Note: The latch must always be installed without the door handle and to remove it you must first remove the door handle.
Step #5. Adjust the door closure
Finally, the striker has a tab that will be recessed into the frame . By inserting a screwdriver and using some leverage to remove the tab, you will help the door to close tightly and prevent the door from vibrating. Look at the photo to see what we are talking about.
